READER RATING:

When Spoken released their Kickstarter-funded Illusion two years agone the outcome was a triumphant improvement to the Christian rock scene. It may not have been their best release, just the format of crowdfunding, recording with complete artistic freedom, and partnering with a label for distribution proved to be a successful formula. For their latest projection, Breathe Again, the ring is taking the aforementioned approach, with the but difference beingness a modify in labels (this time releasing through Avenue instead of eOne) only the consequence is possibly their strongest album since Last Hazard To Breathe.

From start to finish, Exhale Again is a focused project. As the championship suggests, this is an album is filled with themes of spiritual renewal. The concept of God "breathing" new life into us is a mutual theme in the Christian music industry, merely Baird does not settle for trite lyrics or cliché, instead filling each word with a sense of desperation and hope. The lyrics aren't necessarily groundbreaking, simply when paired with Baird's dynamic vocals the straightforward songwriting approach is quite effective. One notable example of this is the chorus of "Breathe Again," "I know inside you lot're falling autonomously / I know exactly where y'all are / I run across the hope, the calorie-free in your eyes / you've come too far to experience this way / so go out the pieces in the grave / starting over once more." The way Baird emphasizes the hurt with gritty vocals and soars with cleans for the more encouraging words leaves a strong impression. Spoken'southward alt-metal fans may exist disappointed that Baird'southward piercing screams only show upwards in modest doses throughout the anthology, but given that his emotional singing is the most unique aspect of Spoken'due south sound, this hardly sets them back from delivering intense rock tunes.

Accompanying Baird'southward impressive vocals are monster guitar riffs from Scoop Roberts and energetic drumming from Isaiah Perez (simply listen to that drum crush on "Surrender"). Dynamic transitions between heavier and steady moments make for an engaging feel, something "Falling Autonomously" truly excels in, building tension during the verses, exploding with a tight drum fill, and driving through a furious chorus. Other highlights include the epic "Hollow and Untrue" with a gritty baseline contrasting a gentle flute and "Walking In My Dreams" which hits full strength with aggressive difficult rock. Many songs have guitar solos, and several carry electronic undertones and/or background strings to provide necessary stardom from track to rails. The iii slower songs also help to break up the album, the two reflective mid-tempo rockers ("Your Memories Are Alive Again," "Cipher Without Yous") provide some relief in the centre of the album, and the sole ballad "Take My Breath Away" serves as a thematically unifying closer.

Though in that location isn't a single weak runway on Exhale Again, there are slightly more solid tracks ("Hold On," "Toxicant in the Air") than in that location are infrequent ones ("Beyond The Stars," "Falling Autonomously") making it country just shy of its fullest potential. Where Illusion appealed to fans of alt-metal and hard rock alike, Breathe Over again might be more for fans of the latter. Regardless of style preference, this project warrants many spins equally information technology is one the strongest rock albums to come out this year.

JFH Staff'due south 2nd Opinion

Spoken has been a band for most 21 years now and while they have undergone some stylistic changes, vocalist Matt Baird has remained the lone abiding variable. Later in his career, Baird has turned to a more alt/metallic version of hard rock; 2013's Illusion was a fantastic record. While their newest is ane of this yr's latest releases, Breathe Again institute its style into my Elevation 10 albums list -- something Illusion fell but curt of. Matt Baird's vocal functioning on Illusion showed peachy improvement and that performance carries over to this release also. Baird sounded actually nasally early in his career, but those days seem to take passed. While I wouldn't phone call Breathe Once again an alt/metal, or hard rock masterpiece, it is easily one of the best rock records this year. Some of the standout tracks are the Matty Mullins featured title track, hard rocking "All I Wanted," "Hollow and Untrue," Falling Autonomously" and slower "Take My Jiff Away." There isn't really a song worth skipping, all the same, "Intro" and "Outro" practise very little to add to the experience. Each is electronically and string driven and neither blend with the rest of the album as much as intended. Information technology'southward rare to have a band around over 20 years, and perhaps rarer withal that the band is releasing their all-time music nonetheless at that point. Matt Baird has done just that with Spoken equally Illusion and Breathe Again are quite possible the band'southward best work. Folks should be jamming Spoken'south latest album for some time to come. - Review date: 12/15/15, written past Michael Weaver of Jesusfreakhideout.com

JFH Staff's Additional 2 Cents

I recently named Spoken as one of my fifteen favorite artists of all fourth dimension, so needless to say, I have been impatiently waiting to hear Breathe Once more. Spoken has not disappointed. I just dig Matt'south uber-unique vocals and when it's blended with hard rock guitar strings and solid drumming, I'thousand a happy guy. Some of the best music on this album would be "Walking In My Dreams," "Breathe Over again" and "Falling Apart." While most will agree that this isn't Spoken's best effort to date and at that place are a few flaws, I can't complain almost these adept tunes that I plan on playing for a while. - 12/three/15, Kevin Hoskins of Jesusfreakhideout.com
